The Morenos had more and more guests visiting their new beach-front home. The craftsmanship of this bond is evident to guests from around the world at the present day Maroma Resort and Spa. This step marked the beginning of Morenos 30-year work relationship with a family of Mayan masons. After accessing the wreckage of their quaint hideaway, Moreno began designing and building a new home from white-washed concrete. Fortunately, the Morenos had fled to Cancun. In 1988, Hurricane Gilbert (or “Gilberto” as they say in Mexico) slammed Maroma and demolished their home on the beach. “After living above where the band played every night and then moving to a place as quiet as Maroma, the silence was deafening,” Shaw Moreno said with a smile. After living for several years above the jazz bar, the Morenos moved to Maroma Beach for good in 1984. Moreno built a kitchen and a second-story to their tiny home. Soon, visitors began arriving to see the paradise described by Jose Luis and Sally. We were all alone on the beach,” Jose Luis reflected. In those days, Jose Luis and Sally were the only residents for miles in what Jose Luis referred to as “the blue lagoon.” “At night, you could look in every direction and not see any lights. They made weekend trips to Maroma where Moreno built a small, one-room dwelling with a thatched roof. They took up residence in the upstairs apartment of a jazz bar Moreno owned. In April of 1981, Moreno and Shaw packed up a Dodge Colt and drove from Chicago to Cancun. This was the beginning of a six-month whirlwind romance. That’s when Shaw met Moreno and he charmed her into visiting the “most beautiful destination she’d ever see.” She decided to embark on a spur of the moment vacation to Cancun. In 1980, Shaw, a native of Petersburg, IL, was working as a writer for a Chicago multi-media training company. That was until Sally Shaw came into Moreno’s life. For the longest time, Moreno was one of the few people to enjoy the beauty of Maroma Beach. For years, Moreno continued to cultivate the coconuts and sold their oil to factories throughout Mexico. Moreno eventually negotiated the purchase of the plantation. The only way to reach this area was by boat from a port eight miles to the north. In the late 70s’, there was nothing but thick jungle between the area’s rural highway and this virgin beach. The site Moreno viewed was at the eastern edge of a coconut plantation. When Moreno looked down at the yet to be named Maroma Beach, he witnessed the most gorgeous white sand and turquoise water he had ever seen. That’s when Jose Luis Moreno, an architect working in Cancun’s fledgling hotel district, flew a small plane over Punta Maroma, a remote bay located 25 miles south of Cancun’s airport. The first page of the first chapter of what was originally called the Maroma Hotel goes back to 1976. The story of the owner’s early days on Mexico’s famed Maroma Beach reads like a real-life Robinson Crusoe. The legend behind the creation of the luxurious Maroma Resort and Spa is almost too good to be true. Today twenty-five Native American languages are still spoken in Oklahoma.A major producer of natural gas, oil, and agricultural products, Oklahoma relies on an economic base of aviation, energy, telecommunications, and biotechnology. Historically it served as a government-sanctioned territory for Native Americans removed from east of the Mississippi River, a route for cattle drives from Texas and related regions, and a destination for Southern migrant settlers. Oklahoma is at a confluence of three major American cultural regions. Interior Highlands, all regions prone to severe weather. With ancient mountain ranges, prairie, mesas, and eastern forests, most of Oklahoma lies in the Great Plains, Cross Timbers, and the U.S. Oklahoma Territory and Indian Territory were merged into the State of Oklahoma when it became the 46th state to enter the union on November 16, 1907. The state's name is derived from the Choctaw words okla, "people" and humma, which translates as "red" Oklahoma is also known informally by its nickname, "The Sooner State", in reference to the colonizers who staked their claims on land before the official opening date of lands in the western Oklahoma Territory or before the Indian Appropriations Act of 1889, which increased European-American settlement in the eastern Indian Territory. Its residents are known as Oklahomans (or colloquially "Okies"), and its capital and largest city is Oklahoma City. Partially in the western extreme of the Upland South, it is the 20th-most extensive and the 28th-most populous of the 50 United States. You can tie in your garage door to your open door alert system and numerically coded keypad entry system, giving you a second layer of protection and security.Lost a remote? If you have a keypad installed, it’s not a total loss.Additional surveys indicate 60% of people who locked themselves out of their homes used a keypad to open the garage door and regain access (and find their keys).Install a lighted keypad, and have even more security. Forty-four percent of parents believe a keypad is easier, more convenient and safer for their children. Recent surveys reveal that 33 percent of parents with school-aged children have a garage door keypad opener. Parents who have school–aged children can use the keypad as a substitute for handing house keys to their children. Why Have A Garage Door Keypad?Īs technology evolves, wireless keypads will become a necessity rather than a luxury. When something passes through the beam as the garage door is closing, the door immediately stops closing and reverses. This feature uses two sensors about six inches above the floor. It’s important to note that all garage door openers manufactured since 1993 require reversing safety mechanisms. Once your fingerprint is stored in the device’s memory, no random person can open the garage door. If you prefer not to use a pin, you have another option with fingerprint access. Safety features of today’s keypads include rolling codes to prevent hackers from discovering your pin. Ask your garage door opener provider for the right type of protection. And you can use a surge protector against voltage spikes. The latest models also come with battery backup. By sending an encoded signal to the garage door opener, they trigger the garage door to open. Garage door openers and keypads are more reliable than ever before. Reasons To Get A Garage Door Opener Keypad Always keep your garage door in sight while it opens and closes. Never allow children access to the keypad, and do not give them your car remote as a play toy. Safety rules for your keypad include mounting the keypad at least five feet from the ground. (Make sure the keypad works with your garage door opener before purchase.) If your garage door opener is more than five years old, you may want to audition a universal keypad before making the purchase. Keypads often come with a garage door opener, but if yours doesn’t, you can purchase a universal garage door keypad. (It’s a great feature if you lock yourself out of your home, or you need to let people in.) A keypad gives you peace of mind - only those with the correct pin can enter. Mount your keyless entry pad outside the garage door, use your pin, and your door will open without using a key. A dual-frequency radio operates the keypad after you key in a personally selected four-digit pin (personal identification number). Garage door opener keypads are keyless entry systems that allow access to your garage. The garage door is the largest moving part in your home, and garage door keypads offer the ease of opening and closing your garage door without straining your back. Today, garage door openers are controlled by a switch on the garage wall, remote controls in a car or on a smart phone, or a keypad attached somewhere outside the garage. His opener was a motorized method of opening a garage door with the press of a button. Cats in Medieval Europe were almost always included in religious texts. The medieval cat painting is believed to have been created between 578 and 595 CE and is said to have been a common thread among religious images and texts. This intriguing scene of a dog biting a cat, which bites a mouse is featured in the introduction of a manuscript written by Pope Gregory I and also features in a commentary on the pope’s Book of Job. The Top 10 Most Famous Medieval Paintings of CatsĬats were first domesticated in the Middle East more than 10,000 years ago and have since been the source of artistic exploration for many aspiring creatives. In the end, these furry creatures always won over the hearts of people and as such, attracted the attention of some of the era’s most interesting artists. Many people domesticated dogs for protection and to safeguard their homes while others domesticated cats for killing mice. The function of pets in Medieval society was more related to serving a purpose rather than affection. The Medieval period was also a time when hierarchy provided safety for the people and information was very much controlled. The Medieval era is also understood as the Dark Age, which was essentially a period where Europe experienced a loss of power. Portrait of a young lady holding a cat (1525) by Francesco Ubertini called Bacchiacca Francesco Ubertini called Bacchiacca, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons This period can be understood as the trial-and-error period in art history where people were beginning to form an understanding of art as well as an appreciation of it outside of the realm of religious purposes. The Middle Ages are often associated with European civilizations that emerged after the collapse of the Roman Empire and lasted until the 15th century. Art is subjective and more often than not, artists are imperfect too. You may have stumbled across the occasional meme page or Facebook post donning the background image of a funny-looking cat or what some may call a “badly drawn” image of a cat. 3.3 Why Are Cats Included in Religious Medieval Paintings?.3.2 Why Did People Paint Cats in the Medieval Period?.3.1 Why Are Renaissance Paintings of Cats So Humorous?.2.8 Adam and Eve (1504) by Albrecht Dürer.2.7 Animals (1486 – 1506) in Book of Hours Codex.2.5 Miniature of the Annunciation (1406 – 1407) in Book of Hours Codex.2.4 Reynard and Tilbert the Cat (14th Century) in Le Roman de Renart.2.3 Cat and Dog (1392) in the Collection of Halakhical Works.2.1 Cat from Book of Job (578 – 595 CE) by Gregory the Great.2 The Top 10 Most Famous Medieval Paintings of Cats.Do yourself a favour and follow this hashtag on Instagram. The multi-thousand page report (don’t worry, you don’t need to read it all!) has detailed analyses for every U.S. The core takeaway here isn’t the size of the multiplier (in this report, nationally, estimated to be roughly a factor of three), but instead the number and locations of jobs supported by NASA that are spread across the United States and the fact that they pay above-average wages consistent with high-skilled STEM fields critical to the nation’s future. Some caution is warranted when looking at absolute dollar figures - the model is sensitive to how one classifies expenditures and to local effects of where the money is spent (e.g., more diverse local economies can supply more local services, so the multiplier is larger). The authors of the NASA economic impact report take a theoretical perspective of NASA not existing in the fiscal year studied. The firms which sell them coffee and groceries, and the local polity that collects property tax on their house, may use those revenues to hire more employees to better serve this and other NASA employees these employees themselves purchase items in their locality, driving more demand, which creates more demand for services, which need more labor, which….well, you get the picture. They will pay state and local taxes on that income and those expenditures. They buy coffee at a local café’ on the way to work, groceries on the way home, and perhaps a house for their family. treasury, spends their salary to live in Alabama. Through the model, this results in a version of the famous multiplier effect: external demand into local area’s economy increases the local economic activity greater than the direct demand itself.Ĭonsider a new NASA employee that moves to Alabama to work at Marshall Space Flight Center. When external-supplying firms increase their output, local-supplying firms end up increasing their output as well. Export base theory considers the economic activity within a certain geographical area and divides it into two groups: firms that provide goods and services to the local area, and firms that supply goods and services to locations outside that area. They used an established economic analysis technique called input-output modeling, which is an extension and elaboration of export base theory. To create this report, the authors applied a detailed economic model to analyze the impact of NASA’s expenditures. For every full-time employee working on Moon-to-Mars projects at a NASA center, 37 additional jobs are supported throughout the economy.Īccording to NASA’s Chief Economist, we can expect an updated report every two years.
